Odoo 20’s 13 New Industry Packages: What They Actually Include

When Odoo 20 was unveiled on 24 September 2026 at Odoo Experience in Brussels, the headline features were AI agents, a rebuilt accounting core, and a redesigned mobile app. Tucked into the release notes, though, is a quieter announcement that matters a great deal to small, specialised businesses: 13 new industry packages. If you run a beauty parlor, a therapy practice, a rental fleet, or a vineyard, Odoo now claims to have a version of itself shaped like your business on day one.

That claim deserves a closer look. An industry package is not a separate product, and it is not magic. This article explains what a package actually contains, lists all 13 newcomers with what Odoo's own release notes say each one covers, and sets out the limits you should understand before building your implementation plan around one.

What an industry package actually is

Odoo is one suite of 50+ integrated apps. Out of the box, those apps are generic: Sales does not know whether you sell tractors or therapy sessions. An industry package closes that gap. When you start a database for a given industry, Odoo installs a curated selection of its standard apps together with trade-specific configuration and starter data — the products and services you would otherwise have to type in, the pipeline stages your work moves through, the document templates and workflows your trade expects. You start from a working model of your kind of business instead of a blank database.

Three consequences follow from that definition:

  • A package is configuration, not new code. Everything in it is built from the standard apps — Appointments, Rental, Planning, Accounting, Website, and so on. Anything a package does, a patient consultant could reproduce by hand; the package simply does it in advance.
  • It is a starting point, not an implementation. Your chart of accounts, taxes, users, and real data still have to be set up, and your actual processes will differ from the template in places. Budget for adjustment, not just adoption.
  • It costs nothing extra. Packages ride on the same subscription as the apps they use; the choice of industry does not change your plan. What changes is how much setup work is left for you.

Odoo has been building this library for several versions, and the existing catalogue already covers trades from accounting firms to hotels. The 20 release adds 13 more, and the selection is telling: it leans hard into care services, rentals, and small appointment-driven businesses — exactly the segment where a generic ERP usually feels most alien.

The 13 new packages at a glance

The table below lists every new package named in the Odoo 20 release notes, with the audience and scope Odoo itself states for each. Five of them — Beauty Parlor, Machine and Tool Rental, Mental Therapy, Pet Groomer, and Physical Therapy — are flagged in the notes as also available from 19.0; the rest arrive with 20.

Reading the list: three clusters

Care and therapy get a real foothold

Four of the 13 — Mental Therapy, Physical Therapy, Community Care, and, in a lighter register, Pet Groomer and Beauty Parlor — revolve around the same skeleton: a client or patient record, a calendar of sessions or appointments, notes or treatment follow-up attached to each visit, and billing at the end. That is the Appointments and customer-management core of Odoo dressed for practices that live and die by their schedule. Community Care is the most ambitious of the group, adding staff planning and resident records — the operational shape of a small care home or home-care agency, not just a booking diary.

Rentals grow up

Two packages target rental, and they are not the same business. Agri-Equipment Rental pairs the rental flow with maintenance operations for high-value machinery — a tractor out on hire still needs servicing, and its downtime is lost revenue. Machine and Tool Rental goes further into rental-specific mechanics that generic setups usually miss: quarantine on returns (hold returned equipment out of circulation until it is checked), down payments consolidated by consumption, and monitoring of machine run-time. If you rent equipment, those three details are the difference between a demo and a system your yard staff will trust.

Project businesses and the public sector

Custom Industrial Equipment is the heavyweight: engineering-to-order work spanning design, prototyping, manufacturing, procurement, and on-site installation, with maintenance and support after handover — a project-and-manufacturing arc, not a product catalogue. Interior Design runs the same project logic at studio scale, from website inquiry to profitability per project. Public Institution is the outlier and the most interesting signal: citizen support, a citizen portal, facility rental, and community events describe a small municipality or public body, a sector Odoo has historically left to specialist vendors. Catering, Vineyard, and Electronic Refurbishment round out the list — Vineyard covers the full grape-to-wine flow, and refurbishment even reaches into the accounting, with VAT margin scheme handling for graded, resold devices.

What a package does not do

Honesty about limits matters more than the feature list:

  • It does not localize you. Fiscal localization — your country's chart of accounts, taxes, and reporting — is a separate layer chosen by company country. A Canadian therapy practice still needs its GST/HST setup reviewed; a package will not do it.
  • It does not migrate your data. Clients, patients, fleet, and history come from your old system by import or manual entry, as with any Odoo start.
  • It does not remove the generic edges. Where your trade has a genuinely unusual workflow, you will still configure, use Studio (on the Custom plan), or build — the package shortens the road, it does not pave all of it.
  • Details are thin in places. For some packages the release notes give a single line. Treat the table above as Odoo's own summary, and verify the specifics in a test database before committing.

How to evaluate one safely

Odoo offers free Odoo 20 test environments (test databases are deleted weekly), which is exactly the right tool here: spin one up with your industry selected, walk your three most common jobs through it — book and bill a session, rent and return a machine, quote and deliver a project — and note where the template matches your business and where it fights you. If the match is good on the core flow, the package will save you real implementation time. If you spend the trial undoing its assumptions, a plain database configured your way is the better start. Either way, you learn it in an afternoon instead of a contract.

The direction of travel is clear. With each release, Odoo is moving the starting line closer to the business: pick your trade, and the system already speaks some of its language. The 13 new packages in Odoo 20 will not implement themselves — but for a salon, a clinic, a rental yard, or a winery, they are the most credible head start Odoo has offered yet.
